Here's the dilemma: use PyXPCOM and make a google maps mashup with a desktop application dead easy or go the less flashy route with wxpython and wx.floatcanvas. The first gives me easy access via Gecko to web goodies, the second lets me use vector drawings I already have. Hmm. PyXPCOM loses this round due to a steep learning curve and a shortness of time on my part. Also, I'm not entirely sure, but based on the size of Komodo, introducing the Mozilla magic might take my app from 'small footprint' to 'giant footprint.'
